Texture and Pattern

Texture refers to the surface quality of materials and objects   how they look and feel   and is often perceived as rough or smooth, hard or soft.  The way a texture actually feels, its tactile quality, influences its use in a room design to a certain degree.  Very rough, uneven surfaces are uncomfortable to sit on and may be difficult to walk across; but a rough plastered wall or a coarse woven tapestry may feel interesting and satisfying to the touch.  The visual quality of textures, their appearance, can greatly influence the composition of a room.  A smooth wall can be given an appearance of having an uneven surface with a patterned wallpaper or the application of a faux finish   or be made to look even smoother covered with a shiny material that reflects light, such as high gloss paint or satin fabric. Sometimes, texture is in the material itself, as in the grain and knots of wood, or comes from the way an object was made.  Sometimes, it results from applying any material over another too achieve a special effect   etching designs in glass or sewing piping around cushions. Patterns refer to the decoration of two-dimensional objects, such as wall coverings and fabric, and are an important visual element in the design of a room.  Most patterns have a definite rhythm to their lines, whether they draw their inspiration from nature, the abstract world, or stylistic themes simplified versions of conventional subjects.  Ornament is closely related to both pattern and texture enrichment of a surface, whether its applied or is an integral part of the design.
